a5c7b9f00b Continuum is a one-hour police drama centered on Kiera Cameron, a regular cop from 65 years in the future who finds herself trapped in present day Vancouver. She is alone, a stranger in a strange land, and has eight of the most ruthless criminals from the future, known as Liber8, loose in the city. Lucky for Kiera, through the use of her CMR (cellular memory recall), a futuristic liquid chip technology implanted in her brain, she connects with Alec Sadler, a seventeen-year-old tech genius. When Kiera calls and Alec answers, a very unique partnership begins. Kiera's first desire is to get "home." But until she figures out a way to do that, she must survive in our time period and use all the resources available to her to track and capture the terrorists before they alter history enough to change the course of the future. After all, what's the point of going back if the future isn't the one you left? A detective from the year 2077 finds herself trapped in present day Vancouver and searching for ruthless criminals from the future. Gah. I really want some juicy new sci-fi. I love sci-fi, and this sounds great on the surface.

But I'm having trouble getting through the first episode as they have taken every obvious plot point, every cliché and there is nothing original.

The child... giving his mother a toy - which you know will make for a poignant moment later. As if you didn't know, the character then talks about how she has a son, and wedding anniversary soon.

The tech-savvy guy who has lots of monitors and will provide the tech assistance. The bad guy, nodding knowingly so you know he's up to something. The good looking local police officer, who will prove to be annoyance/help/love interest.

Just... formulaic on every level. I don't know how this even sees the light of day.

Even the actors are recycled! First Wave, Mutant X, Andromeda... it's like a who's who of sub-standard sci-fi. The premise is that a time-travelling police officer goes into the past to hunt down a group of criminals.

It reminds me a lot of of the cheesy early 90's sci-fi show Time Trax, a lot of the same concepts, and this is basically a modern remake. Compared to its predecessor it plays the premise more for drama than pure action, and definitely shows the advances of 20 years of TV production.

It's a fun series, well written, great effects, and generally entertaining.

One nagging problem I have is that the protagonist is definitely not the "good guy". It's clearly established in the Pilot that the "North American Union" is a totalitarian corporatocracy, where the leaders of the 10 largest companies have unchallenged total control over North America after the "Corporate Rights Act" was passed in 2063, and freedoms like speech and assembly are abolished.

The "terrorists" that are the villains are trying to fight this dictatorship and start a revolution, but are arrested and sentenced to public mass execution for bombing the headquarters of the corporate government, but use some time travel device to go back in time to make their escape. Intending to only go back 6 years, far back enough to prevent their arrest and bring on their revolution, instead they go back 65 years and are stuck in modern-day Vancouver.

I kept watching the show thinking it's amazing we're supposed to be cheering for the police officer. I realized in later episodes they went to more lengths to make the fugitives less sympathetic, but we essentially have a fascist from the future trying to make sure her horrible, dystopian nightmare comes true fighting against a group of freedom fighters trying to prevent the death of democracy with the help of the younger self of the person who founds one of the megacorporations and invents much of the future technology.
